Decent movie. I love the detail they put into having appropriate era ships. Even Micheal Bay's Pearl Harbor failed at that. The actual climatic 'Battle of Midway' felt rushed. They tried to cram everything that happened in the first six months of the war into a two hours movie and the battle only took up about thirty minutes. They should have focused the whole film on the battle rather than giving a history lesson of what lead up to it.

Say whatever you want to say, but this scene alone makes me think 1917 deserved the best film award. The music, the tension, you could actually feel Schofields desesperation and no other film has given me such an experience. Ive trained with these flairs in the marines. It is so trippy to walk when all the shadows are quickly moving and you gain and lose natural ability to see in the dark. This scene brought all that back and hit me right in the feels, and very stressed getting that feeling back. The first time I saw this I was so stressed with him up and running around while flairs were in the air. Made for a fantastic scene.

Ever since I've watched "American Beauty" the directorial debut/beginners luck charm of director Sam Mendes; I've trusted the craftmanship of his films to be top-notch even if the stories aren't as strong ( Jarhead. Spectre. How does "1917" currently hold up?

This film gives us a fly on the wall perspective of a couple of days during World War One (a war that's rarely touched upon in mainstream films. Two British soldiers Will Schofield and Tom Blake must race against a time to hand-deliver a message to a fellow bettalion in order to save them from impending doom by German enemy forces.

This has been touched upon by everyone who knows about this film; but I can't help but mention how making this film look like one take is done masterfully, helping it stand out from other well known/recent war movies.

Those who were disappointed by the lack of characterization in 2017's World War Two juggernaut "Dunkirk" no need to worry because the two main characters are upheld by their charming chemistry and bravery against all odds. Other ally soldiers, supporting characters and special cameos weave in and out of their journey for a short amount of time; but are unforgettable.

Standing among my top 10 for 2019, 1917" is also one of the best of the decade.

Many times in WW1 films, you see some Lee Enfield Mk III and III* models which were used by British and Commonwealth troops which they used, however interspersed among the soldiers you find some Mk 4s (WW2 vintage) and some American Springfield 1903s because of their superior numbers and availability to the movie makers. All of the rifles I saw were Mk IIIs (and Mauser K98s for the Germans of course. The uniforms were accurate as were the aircraft as well. I only noticed a couple of times where people were referred to by the wrong rank (Lance Corporal referred to as “Corporal”) but that was it. Obviously, they must have hired a good technical advisor to have that degree of attention to detail. I had made a personal pet project of mine to study the Great War in detail. I had recently researched the fate of my Great-Grandfather who was Missing in Action on the 3rd of May 1917 and has no known grave. I had crawled around many of the WW1 battlefields retracing his footsteps, and finding the cemetery where he may be buried under a headstone marked “A Soldier of the Great War” of which there are many. Its unfortunate that many people know so little about the “War to end all wars” and how it shaped our world today. It seems to be a forgotten chapter.
